Caring Hands

Remember Into the wild - the biographical adventure drama directed by Sean Penn based on the book of the same name written by Jon Krakauer? It’s an adventure survival drama that falls into most of our best movies list. If you haven’t read or watched it yet, it tells the story of Christopher McCandless, a man who hiked across North America into the Alaskan wilderness. The book, also the movie, meticulously shows the difficulties of a man who is alone in the wild. So, let’s think about that from a different perspective now. How do you think a wild animal would feel or behave when they are displaced from their natural habitat .ie wild and brought to an urban landscape? Much similar to a fish out of the water, agree? Keeping aside the critical importance of wildlife and its habitat in our survival, isn’t it apparent that wild animals should be allowed to live in their natural habitat without any human intervention? We believe in that philosophy and that’s why rehabilitat...

A Tale of 2 Nannies

Image
During my childhood days, I had a nanny who looked after me when my parents went to work. The same might have been the case with some of you growing up. In his book ‘On Writing’, Stephen King has wittily recollected his childhood memories of an awful nanny he had, however, for many of us, the word nanny oozes out a nostalgic and lovely image of a lady who had cared for and looked after us when we were still staining our diapers. The word is synonymous to our childhood memories. What if I tell you that even animals do babysitting? Don’t pop your eyes out of your head, yet. At PfA, we often rescue orphaned or displaced Baby Monkeys. Though we try our best to acclimatize them with their natural habitat, there are things that we cannot replace – like a mother’s love. We, fortunately, have some saviours who aid us in the cause.  Remember Maurice? The wise and benevolent Bornean Orangutan from the Planet of the Apes trilogy? Well, we had our own Maurice at our centre. Elizab...

Sunday Workshops to enrich the compassionate citizens in you

Our understanding, built over the years, suggest that in the landscape of environmental conservation and wildlife protection, ‘Awareness’ is as critical as ‘Action’. Most of the harm we inflict on Mother Nature is the consequence of our ignorance, and if we can successfully spread awareness, it can be cut down to the minimum. Bangalore is a city well known for its opulent nature, and aptly, has been conferred with the title- ‘Garden City’. But the recent decades have been hard on the city, and the Garden City as we know is turning out to be a mirage of the past. Every citizen has an indisputable role in preserving its wildlife heritage. We, at PfA Wildlife Hospital, with the help of conscientious citizens across the city have been successfully conducting awareness campaigns, events and programs to sensitise the public on environmental conservation and wildlife protection. While we conduct veterinary workshops routinely, we decided to start conducting Sunday Workshops f...
