Seasonal Changes and Their Effects on Bangalore's Wildlife
Observing how different seasons influence animal behavior and survival
Bangalore, often referred to as the "Garden City," is not just home to people—it’s also a vibrant habitat for a diverse range of urban wildlife. From kites circling the skies to slender lorises navigating tree canopies, our city’s non-human residents constantly adapt to the rhythm of nature. As seasons shift from summer heat to monsoon showers and mild winters, these changes bring dramatic effects on animal behavior, movement, and survival.
At PfA Wildlife Hospital, we witness these seasonal impacts firsthand, not just in numbers, but in the nature of rescues and the kinds of species that arrive at our facility throughout the year.
Summer: The Season of Scarcity and Heat Stress
The scorching Bangalore summers are particularly hard on animals. Rising temperatures and shrinking water sources lead to:
Dehydration and heat exhaustion in birds, especially pigeons, koels, and black kites.
Increased human-wildlife conflict as snakes, civets, and monitor lizards enter homes in search of water and cooler spaces.
Food scarcity, especially for frugivorous and insectivorous species, as plant productivity dips and insect numbers fluctuate.
At PfA, we see a rise in cases of birds collapsing mid-flight from heat exhaustion or snakes found lethargic and disoriented in urban environments. Simple steps like placing shallow bowls of water outside homes can provide crucial relief.
Monsoon: Life-Giving Rain and Hidden Challenges
The rains bring much-needed respite and renewal to the land—and with it, a flurry of activity in the natural world:
Amphibians and reptiles thrive, emerging from their shelters for breeding.
Insect populations boom, feeding birds and small mammals.
Nest-building and breeding pick up for many bird species.
However, the monsoon also presents dangers:
Flooded burrows and nests can displace animals.
Increase in roadkill and electrocution incidents as animals move to drier urban zones.
A high number of snake sightings as reptiles seek shelter in homes and buildings.
During this time, PfA’s rescue team stays especially alert to calls involving snakes and soaked or injured baby birds fallen from nests.
Winter: A Season of Shelter and Subtle Shifts
Bangalore’s winters are mild, but they still bring notable changes:
Migratory birds visit city lakes and green pockets—an exciting time for bird watchers.
Mammals and reptiles reduce activity, conserving energy and body heat.
Lesser-known species, like the Indian grey mongoose or jungle cats, may venture closer to human habitation in search of warmth and food.
We also see an increase in young or orphaned animals during late winter, when some species begin to breed early. Our rehab team ensures these vulnerable lives get a second chance through timely care.
How You Can Help
Seasonal changes affect more than our wardrobe or commute—they influence the very survival of Bangalore’s wildlife. Here are simple ways you can support them year-round:
Leave water out during hot months
Avoid trimming trees during nesting seasons (February–July)
Call trained rescue teams like PfA if you encounter a distressed or injured animal
Drive slowly, especially during monsoons, when animals are more active
Keep surroundings clean and plastic-free to avoid wildlife injuries
Wildlife Doesn’t Pause for the Weather—Neither Do We
Every season brings a unique rhythm to the natural world, and at PfA Wildlife Hospital, we adapt along with it. Our work is driven by the cycles of nature and the grit of animals trying to survive in an increasingly urban environment.
As residents of Bangalore, we have the privilege—and responsibility—to observe, respect, and protect the wildlife that shares our city. By understanding how seasons affect animal life, we become better allies in their journey.
If you spot an animal in distress, call PfA’s Wildlife Helpline at 9900025370. Let’s work together to ensure every season is a little kinder to the creatures around us.
