Why Frogs Are Important to a Healthy City

 

When the monsoon arrives in Bengaluru, the city changes in ways we can see—and many more that we can hear.

Puddles appear, lakes fill, gardens come alive, and after sunset, a familiar chorus begins from drains, ponds, gardens and patches of green: the calls of frogs.

For many people, frogs are simply a sign that the rains have arrived. But these small amphibians play a much bigger role in keeping urban ecosystems healthy.

From controlling insect populations to serving as food for other wildlife, frogs are an important part of Bengaluru's ecological network. Their presence can even tell us something about the health of the environment around us.


Frogs Are More Than Just "Monsoon Animals"

Frogs are often associated with rain because water is essential to their life cycle.

Many frog species depend on temporary pools, wetlands, ponds and other water bodies to breed. During the monsoon, these habitats become available across the city, triggering breeding and increased activity.

But frogs don't simply appear because it is raining.

They are responding to changes in water availability, temperature, humidity, vegetation and food, all of which are connected to the health of their surroundings.

That makes frogs an important part of Bengaluru's urban ecology.

They Help Control Insects

One of the most useful things frogs do is something we rarely notice: they eat insects.

Depending on the species, frogs can feed on mosquitoes, flies, moths, beetles and other insects.

This makes them natural predators within the food web.

They don't replace responsible mosquito or pest management, but they do play an important ecological role in regulating insect populations.

A garden, wetland or green space with frogs is therefore not just home to amphibians—it is supporting an entire network of interactions between plants, insects and other animals.

Frogs Are Food for Other Wildlife

Frogs aren't just predators. They are also prey.

Snakes, birds, larger reptiles and mammals can all feed on frogs and other amphibians.

That means removing frogs from an ecosystem doesn't just affect frogs. It can have consequences further up the food chain.

A healthy ecosystem isn't made up of individual species living independently. It is a network.

Frogs are one of the links holding that network together.

Frogs Are Environmental Indicators

Perhaps one of the most fascinating things about frogs is their sensitivity to environmental change.

Because they have permeable skin and depend heavily on their surroundings, amphibians can be particularly vulnerable to changes in water quality, pollution, habitat loss and changes in temperature and moisture.

This means that the presence—or disappearance—of frogs can sometimes provide clues about what is happening in an ecosystem.

If a neighbourhood that once had abundant frogs suddenly becomes silent, it is worth asking:

  • Has a water body disappeared?

  • Has the quality of the water changed?

  • Has vegetation been removed?

  • Has pesticide use increased?

  • Has the area become more polluted?

  • Has development fragmented their habitat?

The frogs may not be able to tell us exactly what has changed, but their absence can be a reason to look more closely.

Bengaluru's Lakes Are Important Frog Habitat

Bengaluru's lakes are more than scenic spaces or sources of water.

They provide habitat for a wide range of species, including amphibians.

Wetland edges, aquatic vegetation and seasonal pools can provide places for frogs to feed, hide and reproduce.

But urban wetlands face enormous pressure from pollution, encroachment, construction, invasive species and changes in water flow.

Protecting Bengaluru's wetlands therefore benefits much more than the birds and fish that people commonly associate with lakes.

It also protects the small, often overlooked amphibians living at their edges.

You Don't Need a Forest to Find Frogs

One of the most wonderful things about urban wildlife is that it doesn't always require a wilderness area.

Frogs can be found in:

  • Gardens

  • Parks

  • Lakes

  • Wetlands

  • Agricultural areas

  • Empty plots

  • Ponds

  • Vegetated drains

  • Even some residential compounds

A small patch of vegetation and a seasonal water source can sometimes provide valuable habitat.

This is why maintaining pockets of green space across a city matters.

A city doesn't need to have huge forests everywhere to support biodiversity. A network of smaller habitats can also provide important refuge for wildlife.

Why Pesticides and Chemicals Matter

Frogs are closely connected to their environment.

Chemicals used in gardens, agricultural areas and urban landscaping can potentially affect amphibians directly or indirectly by contaminating water and reducing their food sources.

Excessive use of pesticides can also reduce the insects that frogs depend on.

Creating healthier urban habitats therefore means thinking beyond simply planting trees. It means considering the entire ecosystem—including the small animals that live in and around the soil and water.

What Can Bengaluru Residents Do?

You don't need to be a conservationist to help frogs.

A few simple choices can make urban spaces more wildlife-friendly:

Keep some natural vegetation

Avoid turning every patch of soil into concrete or closely manicured lawn. Native vegetation can provide shelter and food for insects and amphibians.

Avoid unnecessary pesticide use

A garden doesn't need to be completely insect-free to be healthy.

Protect water bodies

Don't dump waste, chemicals or other pollutants into ponds, lakes or drains.

Don't kill frogs because they are "pests"

Frogs are part of the ecosystem and are generally far more beneficial than harmful.

Be careful during the monsoon

Frogs and other small wildlife may become more active around roads and buildings during the rains. Slow down and watch for animals crossing roads, particularly at night.

And What About Frogs Inside Your Home?

During the monsoon, frogs may occasionally find their way into houses, garages or other buildings.

If you encounter one, avoid handling it unnecessarily.

Keep children and pets away, provide a clear exit where possible, and contact a trained wildlife rescuer if the animal is trapped or cannot safely leave.

The goal should be to move wildlife out of harm's way rather than treating its presence as a problem.

Listen to the Monsoon

One of the simplest ways to appreciate Bengaluru's frogs is to listen.

On a rainy evening, step outside and pay attention to the sounds around you.

That chorus coming from a garden, lake or patch of vegetation is not just background noise.

It is evidence of breeding, feeding and movement. It is part of a living ecosystem continuing its seasonal cycle in the middle of a growing city.

And if we stop hearing those sounds, we should notice.

A Healthy City Makes Space for Small Wildlife

When we talk about creating wildlife-friendly cities, we often picture large animals, spectacular birds or expansive forests.

But biodiversity is built from the smallest connections.

The frog eating an insect. The snake eating the frog. The bird feeding near the water. The plants supporting the insects. The wetland supporting them all.

Every species has a role.

Frogs may be small, but their presence tells us that water, vegetation, insects and predators are interacting in ways that keep an ecosystem functioning.

So this monsoon, when you hear frogs calling from somewhere outside your window, don't just think of it as the sound of rain.

Think of it as the sound of a healthy city still making room for wildlife.
