A City at the Crossroads

Image
When Kempe Gowda I, the famous ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire and the founder of Bengaluru, first built a fort here, the place was a jungle with diverse wildlife. While the human population in the city has grown to over 12 million spread across 740 square kilometres today, up from 6 million a few decades ago, the animal density has sharply dropped alongside. Are we keeping an eye out for the changes that have been going on in the ecological environment of our city? Have you ever noticed the decline in the number of sparrows in Bengaluru or the arbitrary changes in its climate? Can we imagine our city without birds adorning its skies, or their chirping in the parks, or chasing squirrels in the trees around? Who wouldn’t like to stroll in a park listening to the humming of birds? Our understanding, built over the years, has enabled us to recognize that any growing city’s ecological sustainability is deeply connected to the state of its urban wildlife population, present in not only its...

Mother Elizabeth!

Image
Somewhere in the deep jungles, I roam as a free monkey, doing acrobatics makes you call me gymnastic and funny. Men trap us as a young baby, straight away from the jungle, remember, we always like to live as troops, social and humble. Why do you use us in the local circus, make us do all the rolling? remember you, humans, the fact, we are not meant for your joking. When there is no freedom for you in lockdown, how you all behave? same is the emotion when our neck is tied up and made a slave I was born as one among the million species of my Earth, but you men think, here, that you conquered back and forth. One day, I was shattered by an acid attack and rendered blind, beaten, attacked, blinded by heinous men, for no mistake of mine. My life was threatened but quickly rescued by Angels of God, vehemently rehabilitated to a rescue shelter by the mercy of Lord. Not letting my blindness burden, I learned to sharpen my other senses, very soon I fostered orphaned, juvenile monkeys within the...

Peacocks in the city!

Image
Peacocks are not a rare sight in Bangalore as the city thrives with many such diverse and unique species of birds. They can be seen in forests and lush, green parks, not that far off from our vicinity. A lot of us merely appreciate the beauty of peacocks and peahens. We are in awe of their magnificent, colourful feathers and their mesmerising dance. But what is their role in the ecology? Peafowls feed on snakes, keeping their population in check. They eat small snakes, including small cobras. In agricultural areas, peafowls eat locusts, insects and grasshoppers, which is very beneficial for the farmers. Peafowls thrive best in their natural environment. Spread in and around the fringe forest areas of Bengaluru, peafowls are found in plenty and the calls are commonly heard too. A variety of reasons cause peafowls to end up displaced, injured or orphaned. Sometimes, in search of water, peafowls mistakenly reach unsafe zones. We have received cases of peafowls being bitten by the dogs or...

A Celebration to Promote Welfare of Snakes - Nag Panchami!

Image
We can all agree with the fact that India is a land of rich culture and traditions, of which, festivals are a major part of our lives. And while many Hindu festivals worship the gods, some festivals are celebrated to worship the nature, the upcoming festival being Nag Panchami. Snake gods are considered to be very powerful and it is believed that pleasing them will bring peace and prosperity to the devotees. Women fast for the day for their families and unmarried girls strive to get a good husband. In all this excitement and the need to please the snake gods, we often forget to celebrate the essence of the festival and to understand snakes. Despite a festival dedicated solely to celebrate snakes, they still remain one of the most misunderstood species. The image which we don since childhood about snakes being powerful makes us fear them. We are so scared of snakes that even looking at a tiny snake can make most of us squeal. What is interesting is that most of the snakes around us are ...

Nestless Natives

Image
I waded through the thick meadows and rested underneath a peepal tree, when a parakeet flew over and rested on a branch and made a squeak. The meadows were green, and a cool breeze blew amidst the hot sun, I was slipping into a trance, underneath the cool shade of the tree.   The parakeet then uttered angrily, “ Why did you drive me away from my home?” When she was building her nest, I asked her, “Are you not in your home, it seems your own ? The parakeet uttered again, but with anger “This is not my home , you drove me away” Pat came my reply, “ I did not drive you; I don’t even know where your home is!”   She wailed, “It may not be you, but your men who destroyed our home, the big grandma tree was a dwelling for our fleet, from times unknown. With sorrow, I asked her, “Was it a wood cutter who drove you all from your home?’, she replied, “ Wood cutter was one, but others were a powerful mobile tower  harming us with radiations and a heinous realtor who wiped out “Grandm...

Parting with your pet made a little easier

Image
A pet becomes an indispensable part of one’s life. So much so that they become someone’s daughter/son, a sibling or a best friend. We always find ourselves safe and happy in their company. But somewhere in the back of our minds, we know that our pets will not be around always and one day, they will become a shining star. We understand that too. And that is why, we put many ideas forward and came up with one of Bangalore’s first ‘Pet Cemetery’. Bengaluru is a metropolitan city, which means less living space for a family. We no longer have gardens and backyards and are instead hung on a flat of a building. While most of the people prefer to bury their pets near them so that they can still feel their presence, it is getting impossible to do this in Bengaluru. PfA Bengaluru, provides a space to the grieving family of the pet and here is everything you need to know: The amount you pay is considered as a donation which is used to treat the dozens of wildlife in-care at the hospital. So in a ...

A Monkey and A Miracle

Image
Hello friends, I am Hanuman, a Bonnet Macaque (one of the monkey species). Do you know how I got this name? This name was courtesy PfA Bangalore as the last ray of hope for me. You must be wondering why so? I am a miracle and thanks to the love, care, and attention at PfA, I have been blessed with a second life. 6 months back, while chasing my companions on NICE road (which used to be my home), due to excitement I missed the coming of a speeding vehicle towards me and I met with an accident that almost took my life. I lay unconscious bleeding to death. I was fortunate to be rescued by the god sent angels, team PfA who took me to their hospital. I was in a comatose condition, had an intracranial head injury, feeble heartbeat, and absolutely no movement. I continued to show no signs of improvement despite their best efforts and treatments which included shock therapy, advance resuscitation procedure, and was kept in an oxygen tent with other animal patients. I was despondent and lifeless...
